This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.
It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
A. x suntense is a soft-wooded deciduous shrub, vigorous and fast-growing, to 5-6m. Leaves are lobed, maple-like and hairy. Flowers are borne 3-4 together at the ends of woolly stalks, each flower to 7.5cm across, with rather silky, usually mauve, flowers with prominent bosses of orange stamens. Floriferous and long-flowering. Several named colour selections are available
'Thompsonii' is an evergreen shrub or small tree of upright habit, with 5 to 9-lobed deep-green leaves, mottled with yellow. From spring to autumn it bears pendent, bell-shaped, orange-flushed, salmon-pink flowers
A. x milleri is an evergreen shrub to 2m tall, with narrowly ovate, 3-lobed leaves and pendent, bell-shaped flowers 4cm long, with apricot-yellow petals and dusky red calyces
'Fool's Gold' is an upright to spreading, semi-evergreen shrub to around 1.2m tall with lobed, toothed, dark green foliage. Nodding, dark-veined, orange flowers up to 6cm wide are borne from summer into autumn
'Lemon Queen' is a fairly large, semi-evergreen shrub with soft, maple-like leaves and large, bell-shaped, lemon-yellow flowers in summer and autumn
'Jermyns' is a vigorous large, more-or-less deciduous shrub with slender-pointed maple-like leaves and bowl-shaped, deep mauve flowers 6cm wide in late spring and summer
'Kentish Belle' is a compact, semi-evergreen shrub with arching shoots and three-lobed, triangular-ovate leaves. Flowers 4-5cm in length, bell-shaped, with orange-yellow petals and dark red calyx
'Savitzii' is an evergreen shrub with maple-like leaves broadly margined with creamy-white; bell-shaped, pale orange-brown flowers are produced rather sparsely
'Linda Vista Peach' is a compact evergreen shrub with lobed leaves and pendulous, bell-shaped, apricot-coloured flowers tinged red in the centre
'Marion' is an open-habited shrub with nodding, orange, bell-shaped flowers held beneath the mid-green, maple-like foliage
