A. foeniculum is an upright, deciduous perennial forming a clump of leafy stems. The leaves are highly aromatic with a distinct aniseed scent, and have white undersides. The flower spikes are short, with broadly ovate bracts, and are a strong violet blue
'Summer Sky' is a compact, bushy perennial to 60cm tall with ovate, aromatic leaves. Flower spikes comprising whorls of small, tubular, violet-blue flowers with darker calyces are borne from summer into autumn
'Golden Jubilee' is an upright, clump-forming perennial, to 90cm tall and wide, with aromatic, lance-shaped, yellow-green foliage. Spikes of fragrant, tubular, violet-blue flowers are borne from summer into autumn
A. rugosa is a short-lived, herbaceous perennial to about 80cm. The edible leaves have an aniseed flavour and the spikes of purple flowers, produced all summer and into autumn, are very attractive to bees
'Tango' is a quick-growing, clump-forming perennial to about 50cm, often grown as an annual. It has grey-green, aromatic foliage and spikes of well-spaced, yellow and orange, tubular flowers from mid-summer into autumn
'Blackadder' is one of the hardiest and most reliably perennial of the genus. Its blue-black spikes of paler-lipped flowers darken in late September and provide winter interest. The aromatic leaves suggest anise
'Firebird' is an upright perennial to 75cm, with grey-green, mint-scented leaves and dense spikes of tubular, soft orange flowers in summer
'Blue Fortune' is an upright deciduous perennial forming a clump of leafy stems, with dense, interrupted spikes of small violet-blue flowers from summer to early autumn
'Red Fortune' is a herbaceous perennial with dark green, aniseed-scented leaves and spires of deep pink flowers from mid-summer to early autumn
'Summer Glow' is a clump-forming perennial, to 75cm tall, with aromatic, ovate, dark green leaves. Spikes of pale yellow-orange flowers with dark reddish-brown calyces are borne from summer into autumn
