This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.
It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
A. schoenoprasum is a bulbous perennial forming a clump of erect narrowly cylindrical, onion-scented leaves, with rounded umbels of light purple bell-shaped flowers
'Hair' is a clump-forming, bulbous perennial, to around 60cm tall, with grass-like, rounde, hollow leaves. In summer, dense flower umbels, up to 4cm across, are borne comprising purple centres from which emerge tendril or hair-like green extensions
A. carinatum subsp. pulchellum is a clump-forming, bulbous, herbaceous perennial to 60cm in height, with narrow leaves on the lower part of the stem. Nodding, rich red-purple, bell-shaped flowers are borne in loose umbels
'Ozawa' is a clump-forming, bulbous perennial, up to 30cm high, with tufts of thin, rounded, grass-like leaves. Purple-pink flowers are held in loose, globular clusters on wiry stems in autumn
'Mount Everest' is a hardy perennial bulb, up to 1.2m tall, with grey-green, strap-shaped leaves. Fifty or more white, star-shaped flowers form tightly-packed balls, up to 12cm across, held on tall, ribbed stems in late spring and early summer
'Beau Regard' is a tall, upright bulbous perennial with broad strap-shaped, spreading, glossy leaves and starry light purple flowers in compact, rounded clusters to 20cm across, in summer
A. tuberosum is a vigorous bulbous plant forming a clump of narrow, edible leaves, with umbels of small, fragrant, star-shaped white flowers in late summer and autumn
A. sativum var. ophioscorodon is an edible, bulbous perennial, to 60cm high, with linear grey-green leaves. In summer, umbels of pinkish-white flowers are borne on flower stalks that are initially coiled like a snake before straightening out. If being grown as an annual for culinary use, each bulb will yield between four and ten cloves or bulbils
A. schubertii is a bulbous perennial producing bright-green, strap-shaped leaves in spring, which die back before the flowers appear. These consist of 50 or more star-shaped, pinky-purple florets on stems of differing lengths producing a starburst effect up to 30 cm across
A. hollandicum is a robust, upright bulbous plant with long, strap-shaped leaves and dense rounded umbels 10cm across of starry, rosy-pink flowers in summer
