This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.
It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
C. x aurantium is a spiny tree, with rounded crown and mid green leaves 7-10cm long. From late spring to summer it bears fragrant white flowers 2cm across singly, in pairs or clusters that are followed by slightly flattened-spherical, red-tinted orange fruit 5-7cm in diameter
C. trifoliata is a bushy shrub or small tree to 7m tall, with green branches bearing large, stiff thorns to 5cm long, and fragrant white flowers like orange-blossom in spring or early summer, followed by orange fruits 4cm across
C. × aurantiifolia is a spiny evergreen shrub or small tree with aromatic, glossy green leaves and fragrant white flowers in late spring or summer, followed by rounded green or greenish-yellow fruit (limes) 4-6cm across
C. microcarpa is a bushy evergreen shrub to 4m tall, with elliptic, glossy rich green leaves and small, fragrant white flowers followed by spherical orange fruits 3-4cm across
'Meyer' is a compact, spiny, evergreen shrub with ovate leaves, fragrant white flowers and rounded orange-yellow fruit to 8cm across
'Variegata' is a spiny evergreen shrub with yellow-variegated, ovate leaves and fragrant white flowers, followed by ovoid fruits, striped with green when young, later almost entirely yellow
C. japonica is a large spiny evergreen shrub with glossy lance-shaped leaves and axillary clusters of fragrant white flowers 1.2cm across in spring and summer, followed by globose orange fruits 3-4cm across
'Gary's Eureka' is a lemon that fruits and flowers most of the year. Flowering most prolifically from spring until early autumn, the scented blooms are white, though tinged purple in bud. Plants are self-fertile, usually grafted and quite thorny in their early years. Reaches 2m in height over ten years
'Forncett Citrus' is a spreading perennial to 75cm, with finely divided, grey-green leaves and lemon-yellow flowers borne in flattened clusters
C. medica is a large spiny evergreen shrub with deep green, ovate leaves and small clusters of fragrant white flowers 3.5cm across and flushed pink externally, followed by lemon-shaped, yellow fruits to 30cm in length
