This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.
It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
E. macrophylla is a vigorous, wide-spreading evergreen shrub, to 3m high and 5m wide, with spineless branches which are covered in silvery scales when young. Broad, rounded leaves, 5-12cm long, are intensely silvery when young because of the silvery scales on both sides which gradually wear off the upper surfaces so that they become glossy dark green. Clusters of small but extremely-fragrant, silvery-cream flowers in autumn are followed by edible, oval, red fruit in late spring or early summer
'Frederici' is a dense, slightly spiny, evergreen shrub with narrow, dark green leaves marked with a large, prominent, pale yellow, central splash. Small, fragrant, white flowers in autumn are sometimes followed by red berries in winter
'Quicksilver' is a large, deciduous, suckering shrub with silvery shoots, silvery-scaly, ovate leaves and small, fragrant creamy-yellow flowers from silvery buds in summer
E. umbellata is a deciduous bushy shrub to around 5m tall and wide. Its leaves are narrowly oval with wavy edges, 5-10cm long, silvery when young before maturing to green but staying silvery beneath. Fragrant creamy-yellow flowers borne in small clusters in late spring to early summer are followed by egg-shaped silvery fruit that ripen to red
'Sweet 'n' Tart' is a fast-growing shrub, up to 5m high, with deciduous, soft, narrow green leaves with silvery undersides, and abundant small but very fragrant cream flowers in early summer. Flowers are followed by round, red, sweet, acidic, edible fruits, larger than those typical for the species, in autumn
'Maculata' is a bushy evergreen shrub to 4m tall, with slightly spiny brown shoots bearing elliptical bright yellow leaves narrowly margined with dark green; small, fragrant white flowers in autumn
'Goldrim' is a bushy evergreen shrub, often spiny, with elliptic, dark glossy green leaves narrowly edged with golden-yellow, and small fragrant white flowers in autumn
E. × submacrophylla is a large, dense, rounded evergreen shrub with broad, leathery, dark or metallic sea-green leaves, silvery scaly beneath, and small, fragrant white flowers in autumn
'Limelight' is a variegated selection of this resilient shrub, having silvery young leaves that then develop irregular markings in dark green, lime green and gold (may fade to cream with exposure)
'Gilt Edge' is a vigorous medium-sized evergreen shrub with broadly-ovate dark green leaves margined with yellow. Small, fragrant, silvery flowers sometimes followed by orange berries
