It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
F. carica is a large shrub or small, spreading tree to around 3m tall and 4m wide with rounded, lobed leaves. Insignificant flowers are followed by edible fruit that ripen to shades of green and purple
'Schrijveriana' is an evergreen tree to 4m or more, with broadly elliptic glossy dark green leaves, heavily marbled with grey and margined with creamy-white; stalks and midribs red beneath
'Starlight' is a large evergreen shrub with slender-pointed, ovate leaves broadly margined with creamy-white
F. elastica is an evergreen tree with broadly elliptic, dark, glossy green leaves to 40cm in length, with small yellow fruits produced only on large trees
'Brown Turkey' is a large deciduous shrub with bold, deeply lobed leaves and insignificant flowers followed by edible fruit to 10cm in length, at first green, but purplish when ripe. Usually one crop of fruit per year, but sometimes two in a hot summer or under protection
F. pumila is an evergreen self-clinging climber or trailer to 3m, with rich green, ovate leaves 2-5cm in length on climbing shoots, larger and narrower on non-climbing shoots; purple fruits to 5cm in length
'Brunswick' is a large, deciduous shrub with bold, very deeply-lobed leaves and insignificant flowers followed by large, purple-flushed, green, pear-shaped fruit. Usually one crop of fruit per year, but sometimes two in a hot summer or under protection. Hardy and reliable
'Ice Crystal' is a distinctive cultivar mostly grown for its attractive deeply divided and cut foliage that turns yellow in the autumn
F. lyrata is a robust evergreen tree to 5m or more, with glossy dark green, obovate or fiddle-shaped leaves to 45cm in length, the veins impressed above; flowers and fruits not seen on container-grown plants
'White Marseilles' is a large, deciduous shrub with bold, deeply-lobed leaves and insignificant flowers followed by pale green, edible fruit . Usually one crop of fruit per year, but sometimes two in a hot summer or under protection
