This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.
It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
P. beauverdiana var. notabilis is a fast-growing deciduous tree to around 9m tall with fine-toothed ovate to elliptic leaves up to 12.5cm long. Clusters, 7.5-10cm in diameter, of small white flowers appear in spring and are followed by orange-red berries
Pink Crispy 'Oploo5' is a shrub 2m high with red stems and toothed, glossy, oblong leaves which are bright pink when young, becoming dark green marbled with very light green, and large clusters of small white flowers in summer, followed by small red fruit
P. beauverdiana is a spreading deciduous tree with long, oval, dark green leaves, turning red in autumn. Clusters of small, white flowers, 5cm across, appear in late spring followed by red berries
P. davidiana is a large evergreen shrub with elliptic leaves, some of which turn red in autumn and fall in winter; white flowers in late spring are followed by red berries
P. serratifolia is a spreading, evergreen tree with peeling grey and red-brown bark when mature. Leaves are glossy dark green, red when young, and finely-toothed. Small white flowers are produced in large, flattened clusters in late spring and early summer, followed by red fruit
Pink Marble is a variegated, evergreen shrub with glossy, dark green leaves irregularly margined with white. In spring the young leaves are bright red with shocking-pink variegation. Sprays of small, creamy-white flowers appear in spring
'Red Robin' is a dense medium-sized evergreen shrub of erect habit, with glossy, elliptic leaves to 10cm in length, bright red when young, later dark green. Flowers creamy-white, rather sparse
'Palette' is a slow-growing, but ultimately large, variegated, evergreen shrub. The leaves are splashed with cream, pink when young, and older leaves go red in autumn. Sprays of small, white flowers appear in midsummer, followed by bunches of round, bright red berries
P. villosa is a small deciduous tree or large shrub to 5m, with ovate leaves to 8cm in length, turning bright orange and red in autumn. Corymbs of small white flowers in early summer are followed by bright red berries
