This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.
It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
'Flower Power' are compact, bushy, free-flowering violas to 15cm in a wide range of colours including blue, orange, purple, red, white and yellow with some bicolours and some with whiskered 'faces'. Can be grown to flower for several months between February and November, depending on sowing date
'Bridie' is an evergreen perennial viola to 25cm high with deep green leaves and, from spring into summer, scented flowers borne on sturdy stems with cream to pale yellow frilly petals edged with violet
'Königin Charlotte' (Vt) is an evergreen perennial forming mounds of shiny, deep-green rounded to heart-shaped leaves with sweetly-scented, large deep-purple flowers borne in late winter or early spring
'Moonlight' is a spreading evergreen perennial to 20cm tall, with ovate leaves and narrow, long-stemmed, pale creamy-yellow flowers 3cm wide in late spring and summer
H. violacea is an evergreen climber with twining stems to 2m and ovate leaves to 12cm in length. Purple, or occasionally pink or white, flowers to 10mm across are borne in pendent racemes from late winter
'Irish Molly' is a neat clump-forming perennial to 20cm tall, with ovate leaves and fragrant flowers 4cm wide, the upper petals brownish-maroon with violet and green shading, the lower one yellow with a reddish-brown marking
V. odorata is a rhizomatous perennial forming a loose mat of heart-shaped leaves with fragrant violet or white flowers 2cm across in late winter and early spring
'Silver Lace' is a clump-forming perennial to 60cm with corm-like rhizomes and narrowly linear grey-green foliage with a cream margin. Terminal clusters of fragrant, pale lilac flowers up to 3cm long are borne from mid-summer to early autumn
'Deltini Rose Pink' is a small-flowered, compact pansy to around 20cm, with white flowers, 3-4cm across, shading to mid-purple on the upper petals and pale purple on the lower ones, with a yellow eye
'Wellsiana' is a compact semi-evergreen perennial forming a spreading clump to 10cm in height, with dark green leaves and large, long-stemmed, very fragrant, deep purple flowers
