A. hirsutus is an herbaceous perennial, to 45cm tall, with a rosette of toothed and prickly, lance-shaped, dark green leaves, each up to 40cm long and 8cm wide. In summer, short spikes bear creamy-pale-yellow flowers hooded with green bracts. The leaves, stems and flower spikes are covered with silky hairs
'Summer Beauty' is a robust, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with deeply-lobed, glossy vibrant green foliage forming a mound to 75cm tall. Spikes of white flowers, covered by hood-like spiny bracts, to 1.8m tall are borne above the foliage in summer
'Whitewater' is an herbaceous perennial, to 1.5m high, with large, deeply cut, variegated dark-green leaves covered with white splashes. In summer, erect flower stems bear white, funnel-shaped flowers with hood-like purple bracts
'Morning's Candle' is an herbaceous perennial, to 1.2m tall, with deeply-toothed dark green leaves forming a mound up to 1m wide. Spikes of hooded white flowers, protected by prickly purple bracts, are borne above the foliage in summer
