It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
A. napellus subsp. vulgare is a tall herbaceous perennial with dark green, finely divided leaves and spires of hooded, dark blue flowers from late summer into autumn
A. napellus is an upright tuberous perennial to 1.5m tall, with deeply divided, dark green leaves and tall spires of violet-blue, hooded flowers in mid and late summer
Arendsii Group is a somewhat variable, clump-forming perennial comprising erect stems to around 1.2m tall with deeply divided, dark green leaves. Unbranched spikes bear hooded, lavender-blue flowers in autumn
'Eleanora' is a herbaceous perennial up to 1m high with strong upright stems, lobed, divided, deep green leaves, and spikes of high-hooded white flowers edged in blue-violet, from midsummer to late summer; the flowers may be visited by bumblebees, particularly long-tongued species, who are not affected by the toxins
'Bicolor' is an herbaceous perennial to 1.2m, with deeply divided, glossy dark green leaves and widely-branched spikes of hooded, violet-blue and white flowers
A. lycoctonum subsp. moldavicum is an upright perennial with rounded 5-7 lobed dark green leaves and panicles of grey flowers, with cream at the mouth and pale violet on the spurs
A. lycoctonum is a tall, upright perennial to 1.5m with rounded, five- to seven-lobed, dark green leaves and sprays of usually yellow, sometimes smoky purple, hooded flowers in mid- to late summer
'Russian Yellow' is an upright, clump-forming perennial to around 1.2m tall with deeply divided, dark green leaves. Branching stems bear heads of hooded, pale yellow flowers in summer
A. lycoctonum subsp. neapolitanum is a herbaceous perennial, to 1.2m, with divided light green leaves and stems of many-flowered creamy-yellow flowers
'Spätlese' is an upright, herbaceous perennial to around 1.2m. It has finely-divided, glossy green leaves and short spikes of light blue, hooded flowers in late summer and early autumn
