This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.
It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
'Claire Maxine' is most notable for its gleaming, puckered foliage, mid-green, reddening in winter. Flowers are deep pink but sometimes hidden beneath the leaves; flowers mostly in spring with sporadic flowers produced through to October
'Herbstblute' is a clump-forming, evergreen perennial, to around 45cm tall, with oval, mid-green leaves, to 15cm long, that turn shades of red and purple in autumn and winter. Stout stems bear open, bell-shaped pink flowers in spring with sporadic reblooming occurring throughout the summer and occasionally into autumn
B. pacumbis is a clump-forming, evergreen perennial to around 20cm high. The smooth, green, rounded to ovate leaves, 10-15cm long, have hairy, serrated margins. In spring, short stout stems bear white to pink flowers
'Vinterglöd' is a herbaceous perennial, up to 40cm high, with glossy, dark green leaves, flushed with red in winter. Dark pink flowers are produced on dark red stalks in spring and often also later in autumn
'Sunningdale' has deep-pink flowers with redder centres held over erect leaves in a range of surface colours, with striking red reverses
'Irish Crimson' has deep-pink nodding flowers held up above neat, narrow, upstanding leaves with intense red winter colour
'Biedermeir' has robust heads of large flowers in clean pale pink with darker centres; flowers mostly in spring with sporadic flowers produced through to October. Foliage green with red tints, particularly at the margins, all year round
B. crassifolia var. pacifica is an evergreen, clump-forming perennial, to 30cm high and 20cm wide, with toothed, rounded leaves, often tinged with red in winter particularly if grown on exposed sites. Clusters of purple-pink flowers are borne from winter into spring on branched stems
'Rotblum' is a clump-forming, evergreen perennial, to 50cm tall, with wavy-edged green leaves, tinted bronze-red, especially in winter. Clusters of rosy-red flowers are borne on stout red stems in spring
'Bressingham Salmon' is an evergreen, clump-forming perennial, to 30cm high, with large, oval, dark green leaves that are tinged red in winter. Clusters of bell-shaped, salmon-pink flowers are borne on short stems in spring
