It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
'Pink Goblet' is a sturdy cormous perennial to 15cm in height, bearing about 6 goblet-shaped, bright violet-purple flowers about 7cm across, with a strong honey scent
'Waterlily' is a cormous perennial to 12cm in height in flower, with fully double lilac-pink flowers about 8cm in length. Strap-shaped leaves appear after the flowers
'Violet Queen' is a cormous perennial 15cm high with semi-erect, broadly lance-shaped leaves, 18-25cm long, from winter to spring, and 1-5 fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers, 4-6cm long, with strongly tessellated pinkish violet tepals with white centres and yellow anthers, in autumn; colchicums are a useful late-season source of pollen for honeybees
'Atrorubens' produces amethyst-purple flowers 15-20cm high on purple-stained stems in autumn
'Dick Trotter' is a cormous perennial 15-20cm high with leaves about 25cm long, from winter to spring, and goblet-shaped pink-violet flowers with star-shaped greenish white centres and yellow anthers, in autumn; colchicums are a useful late-season source of pollen for honeybees
'Album' is a perennial to 15cm in height, with 1-3 green-throated, pure white flowers 6cm in length in autumn, followed by strap-shaped bright green leaves to 25cm in length
'The Giant' is a robust cormous perennial 20cm high with semi-erect, narrowly ovate leaves, 18-25cm long, from winter to spring, and a succession of up to 5 somewhat goblet-shaped flowers, up to 8cm long, with lightly tessellated tepals which are purple-violet with white bases, in autumn; colchicums are a useful late-season source of pollen for honeybees
C. cilicicum is a cormous perennial 10cm high with semi-erect, narrowly elliptic to elliptic-lance-shaped leaves, 30-40cm long, from winter to spring, and 3-25 funnel-shaped flowers, 4-7.5cm long, with purplish pink tepals, sometimes deeper in colour towards the blunt tips, in autumn; colchicums are a useful late-season source of pollen for honeybees
C. tenorei is a free-flowering, cormous perennial to 15cm in height, with faintly tessellated, rosy-pink flowers 6cm in length, the stigma-lobes purple
C. autumnale is a cormous herbaceous perennial to 15cm, with erect, strap-shaped leaves to 30cm in length, and in autumn, up to 6 crocus-like lavender-pink flowers 6cm in length
