It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
'Anny' is an upright, deciduous shrub to 2m tall or more, with mid-green, oval leaves turning yellow and orange in autumn, insignificant white flowers in summer and small black berries. The main feature is the coloured winter stems - bright yellow at the base, shading to orange then vivid red towards the tips
'Winter Beauty' is a deciduous shrub to 2m tall or more if left unpruned, with oval leaves turning orange-yellow in autumn; the winter stems are pale yellow below, red in the upper part
'Cardinal' is a suckering, medium-sized, deciduous shrub, forming thickets of yellow-orange stems with red tips, brightest in winter. Simple, oval leaves give some autumn colour; small, off-white flowers in late spring or early summer are followed by white berries
'Ruby' is a deciduous shrub with narrow, upright, bright red stems shading to greenish-orange at the base. The mid-green leaves turn wine-red in autumn. Clusters of small, cream flowers in late spring and early summer are followed by white fruits
'Magic Flame' is an upright, deciduous shrub to 2m or more, with large, ovate green leaves that turn shades of yellow, orange and red in the autumn. Bare winter stems are coloured orange-yellow with bright red tips. Flat, dense clusters of creamy-white flowers are followed by blue-black fruit
'Anny's Winter Orange' is an upright deciduous shrub to 2m tall or more, one of the best cultivars for vigour and winter colour, having orange-red flushed stems in winter
C. sanguinea is a deciduous shrub of upright, bushy habit, with young shoots reddish in winter, ovate leaves turning deep red in autumn, and small white flowers in flat clusters, followed by black berries
'Midwinter Fire' is a spreading shrub to 2m tall, with orange-red and yellow young shoots bearing oval leaves and insignificant white flowers in summer; grown for the coloured stems which are brightest in winter
'Sifa' is a deciduous shrub with finely-branched, upright stems to about 2m, turning rich orange in winter. The mid-green leaves turn greenish-yellow in autumn. Clusters of small, white flowers in summer are followed by black fruits
