F. sylvatica is a large, vigorous deciduous tree with a broad, spreading crown. Leaves broadly elliptic, yellow-green in spring, rich russet-brown in autumn. Flowers small, green, followed by bristly fruits
'Rohan Obelisk' is a narrow, columnar tree with bronze-purple, irregularly lobed or deckle-edged foliage
'Dawyck Gold' is a dense, fastigiate, small deciduous tree with bright golden-yellow young foliage, becoming yellow-green in summer, yellow and brown in autumn. Flowers inconspicuous; fruit bristly
Atropurpurea Group are large deciduous trees grown for their deep purple leaves, which become reddish in autumn
'Dawyck Purple' is a fastigiate, medium-sized deciduous tree with deep purple foliage. Flowers inconspicuous; fruits bristly
'Riversii' is a large, broad-crowned deciduous tree. Leaves elliptic, rather large, deep purple. Flowers inconspicuous, fruits bristly
'Pendula' is a large deciduous tree forming either a broad crown with wide-spreading main boughs draped with long, pendulous side-branches, or more upright with steeply drooping branches. Leaves elliptic, green
'Aspleniifolia' is a medium-sized deciduous tree with a broad, open crown. Leaves variable, mostly long and narrow, cut deeply into several pairs of pointed lobes and turning orange-brown in autumn
'Rohanii' is a slow-growing, deciduous tree with an upright, branching habit. The oak-like leaves with shallow, rounded teeth and wavy margins emerge bronze-purple in spring maturing to dark green, purple and shades of brown in summer before turning a golden orange-brown in autumn. Inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers are followed by brown fruits in autumn
'Dawyck' is a large, fastigiate deciduous tree, becoming broadly columnar with age. Leaves green, elliptic, turning orange-brown in autumn. Flowers inconspicuous, fruit bristly
