It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
'Gardenia' is a bushy, clump-forming perennial to 90cm high with dark green, divided foliage. Fragrant, double, white flowers, sometimes tinged with a faint pink blush, 20-25cm across, are borne on sturdy stems in early summer
'Mr G. F. Hemerik' is a clump-forming perennial, to 80cm tall, with dark, glossy green, divided foliage. Flowers, produced in early to mid-summer, consist of a bowl of vivid pink petals with a central mass of ruffled yellow staminodes
P. x smouthii is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial to around 70cm tall with foliage divided into dark green leaflets. Fragrant, single, dark crimson flowers to 10cm in diameter with conspicuous yellow stamens are borne in profusion in spring
'Souvenir de Maxime Cornu' is an upright, branching, deciduous shrub to 2m tall with divided green leaves. Large, fragrant, double flowers borne from late spring into early summer have ruffled, dusky yellow to pale orange petals edged with pink
'Doctor Alexander Fleming' is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial to 90cm, with dark green, divided foliage and fragrant, fully double, pink flowers from early to mid-summer
'Goldilocks' is a clump-forming perennial to 70cm tall, with dark green, divided foliage. The flowers, produced in late spring to early summer, consist of an outer ring of large, very pale yellow to white petals and a mass of pale yellow staminodes with a few pale, narrow petaloids in the centre
'Primevère' is a clump-forming perennial to 90cm tall, with dark green, divided foliage. The large flowers, produced in early summer, have creamy-white outer petals with pale yellow centres fading to cream
'Sword Dance' is a clump-forming perennial to 90cm tall with glossy, dark green, divided foliage. Flowers borne from late spring into early summer comprise deep red petals surrounding golden-yellow staminoides streaked with red
'Dorenn' is a clump-forming, herbaceous perennial to 80cm tall with divided, dark green leaves, and from late spring into summer, single, lightly-scented, pink flowers with prominent yellow staminoides borne on reddish stems
'Duchesse de Nemours' is an herbaceous perennial to 80cm, with dark green, divided foliage and fragrant, fully double, white flowers 15-20cm across
