This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.
It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
'Nymans' is an evergreen shrub of bushy, spreading habit, with blunt, narrowly elliptic dark green leaves to 12cm in length, and clusters of small white flowers, and globose bright red berries 10mm in width
'Pabella' is a bushy, evergreen shrub, to 1m tall, with glossy, dark green, elliptic leaves. Panicles of small, fragrant white flowers in spring are followed by glossy green fruit which ripen to bright red in autumn and persist on the plant through the winter
'Wakehurst White' is a rounded evergreen shrub with mid-green, oval leaves and small white flowers in spring, followed by glossy white berries
'Chilan Choice' is a compact evergreen shrub with leathery oval leaves and small, slightly fragrant white flowers, followed by showy red berries in autumn
'Bronze Knight' is an evergreen shrub of open habit, 1-1.5m tall and wide, with dark red winter flower buds opening to dense clusters of small, fragrant, white flowers in spring. This is a male clone, so no berries are produced
'Fragrans' is a small, bushy evergreen shrub forming a low dome with aromatic, dark green, obovate leaves to 10cm in length, and dense clusters of small, fragrant white male flowers
'Godrie's Dwarf' is a compact, rounded, evergreen shrub to around 75cm tall and wide with elliptic, leathery, mid- to dark green leaves. Terminal panicles of greenish-white winter buds gradually darken in colour to a pinkish-red before opening to tiny, fragrant, pink flowers in spring; this is a male clone so does not produce berries
'Veitchii' is an upright, evergreen, dense shrub, to 1.5m tall and wide, with broadly-oval, rich green leaves. Dense clusters of small, star-shaped, white spring flowers are followed by brilliant red spherical fruit
'Rubella' is a small, bushy evergreen shrub with dark green, elliptic leaves to 10cm long. Panicles of red buds, showy in late winter, open to fragrant white flowers in early spring
S. japonica is a variable, evergreen, densely-branched, dome-shaped shrub, low and creeping or erect, from 0.5m to 7m in height (but typically up to 1.5m in cultivation), with slightly-aromatic, dark green, leathery, obovate to elliptic leaves. White flowers in spring, sometimes flushed pink or red on the outside, appear in panicles at the ends of branches; male flowerheads are large and conspicuous, up to 8cm long, and very sweetly-scented, while the smaller fragrant female flowerheads are followed, if pollinated, by brilliantly bright red fruits, 8mm across, which usually last until the next flowers appear the following spring
