Botanical photography

This category is for a compilation of six images in a series or on a common theme, and is judged for RHS medals at the RHS Botanical Art & Photography Show at Saatchi Gallery, London.

Please note: The Portfolio category is judged as a physical exhibition. Winners were announced and displayed at the 2023 RHS Botanical Art & Photography Show. We would like to thank the Portfolio entrants for their continued support.

Botanical art

In 2023, a diverse range of subjects were presented by participants from around the world. Artists depicted plants of ecological importance including English seaweed and Scottish lichens, Australian algae, endangered plants of Korea, and wildflowers of Greece. Heritage garden blooms were also featured, sitting together with pictures of fabulous fruit and medicinal herbs.

Selection and judging

Entries for the show went through a meticulous pre-selection process, where the scientific accuracy, technical skill and aesthetic appeal of the work were reviewed by an expert judging panel prior to the show opening.

Artists and photographers were awarded RHS Gold, Silver-Gilt, Silver, and Bronze medals, as well as a series of special awards.

Reaching a wider audience

The show complements the work of the RHS Lindley Collections, with RHS Gold medal-winning artworks regularly added to the collections, contributing to a long legacy of botanical art collecting and displaying by the RHS.

We hold more than 30,000 botanical paintings stretching back to the 1630s and heritage photographic images starting in the 1860s. Botanical art and photography help pinpoint trends and discoveries of plants popular in UK gardens.

Riverstone, which delivers exceptional London living for people over 65, is proud to support the RHS Botanical Art & Photography Show in partnership with the Saatchi Gallery.
