RHS Master Grower

We're celebrating the growing methods of specialist nurseries who produce the amazing plants and breath-taking displays at our flower shows

What is the RHS Master Grower?

Each year, we select five leading nurseries to feature in our Master Grower scheme, and at each of our major shows we tell the story of one of them – explaining their journey to the show through the highs and lows of breeding and producing plants.

Throughout the year, we will tell the story of each RHS Master Grower and their journey to the show, taking you behind the scenes at the nursery and introducing the dedicated people that make the business possible.

Why introduce Master Grower?

We want to inspire visitors to grow and learn about plants, understanding the nursery and its work practices. The layout of each RHS Master Grower feature will encourage visitors to get involved with the exhibitor, helping new gardeners find out about growing techniques by getting advice and watching demonstrations.

What makes a Master Grower?

Successful nurseries:

  • Propagate a high percentage of plant material at their own nursery

  • Use methods that are ethical and sustainable where possible

  • Are involved with plant breeding/development of new varieties

  • Produce a range of unusual, garden-worthy plants

  • Support the RHS Shows, including London Shows and the RHS Gardens.

  • Have achieved past awards and medals.

  • Give great customer service

How will RHS Master Growers feature at shows?

The RHS Master Grower scheme was launched at Tatton Park in July 2016 and featured the specialist herb grower Hooksgreen Herbs. Their exhibit was located at the centre of the Floral Marquee and featured planted displays, photographs, a video telling the story of the nursery and its owners, as well as a demonstration area.

The Hooksgreen Herbs exhibit set the stage for the RHS Master Grower scheme and showed one way in which first-rate nurseries can use the shows to engage visitors and generate sales. Through 2017 and beyond, each exhibit will tell the respective nursery’s story differently and show the diversity of growers.
