Electuary
With a storybook feel, this garden is a tranquil, immersive space based on traditional crafts such as beekeeping and thatching
Artisan Garden

The garden
A symbiotic relationship with the land is mutually beneficial for both humans and invertebrates. Rooted in this idea, Electuary emerges as a tranquil, immersive and storybook-like garden that feels at once lived-in and carefully crafted.
The space draws on the designer’s own experience as a beekeeper and offers a pastoral paradise where a combination of natural materials, layered planting and architectural features come together to create an ideal setting for artisans and bee enthusiasts alike. Traditional crafts are embraced as sustainable building methods, from wicker weaving, to thatching and hedge laying – a long-standing tradition in the Cotswolds.
With its beehive, pergola, water feature and oast house made from breathable materials, this garden forms an interwoven mesh of activity that feeds into a regenerative, sustainable cycle, inspiring anyone seeking to support invertebrates.
The planting
Herbal remedies are prepared using a considered selection of native plants, each chosen for its wildlife impact.
Key plants:
-
Hawthorn: an important hedgerow plant, with early nectar, berries through winter, and a thorny protective house for birds
-
Dandelion: a deep rooted, resilient native plant, a useful herb, a continual nectar source and a creative use of space in thick grass
-
Dock: known for its healing properties, it is a good food source and is a deep rooted, resilient native
-
Nettle: a native plant that is edible, good for butterflies and used in compost tea
-
Borage: a great plant for bees and a source of herbal material

The designer – Joshua Fenton
Joshua started his career in horticulture working in the holidays as a 14-year-old at a large private garden in North London. Horticulture became a reliable way to support himself during his teens while he completed his school education and then went to Art College where he fell in love with Land Art. After a year travelling and working on farms all around the world, he worked in horticulture and then completed his RHS Level 3 in Practical Horticulture.
He set up Fenton Gardens in 2019 and has since won Silver merit at the APL awards 2023, Silver merit at BBC Gardeners’ World live 2023, Silver, Silver merit and Gold at the APL awards 2024 and Gold at BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2024. In 2025 his container garden, C6, won an RHS Silver-gilt medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Joshua likes to think his style is contemporary, chaotic romance.
