A rounded, deciduous shrub about 1.5m tall, with spiny stems and glossy, mid-green leaves, and bearing very early flowering dark pink flowers produce on leafless stems in late winter and early spring, followed, in autumn by aromatic green fruits ripening to yellow. These can be used to make jams and jellies but please see notes on toxicity for further advice
