More about this episode

The fourth episode in the series sees Jo Whiley meeting broadcaster, writer and horticulturist Alan Titchmarsh CBE at RHS Wisley in Surrey. As they spend time in the garden together, Alan reflects on some of his earliest memories of plants and landscapes, including childhood walks through sweet peas with his grandfather. He also talks Jo through key moments from a horticultural career spanning more than 60 years and shares how gardens have shaped both his working life and his sense of home.

The visit also explores a lesser known but vital part of the garden ecosystem. Alan is joined by RHS Senior Plant Pathologist Jassy Drakulic, who introduces him to the fascinating world of fungi. Together they discuss why fungi matter, how they support plant health and what gardeners can look out for beneath the soil. The episode highlights Alan’s lifelong curiosity about the natural world and shows how even after decades in horticulture, there is always something new to discover.
