Silas Zoeller

2022/23 RHS Interchange Fellow on placement from the USA to the UK

RHS Garden Wisley: Trying something new

Less than three months into the RHS/GCA Interchange Fellowship, I have had the opportunity to try my hand at a variety of new tasks at RHS Garden Wisley, as well as study and work with a stunning diversity of plants and visit many incredible gardens.

From curating rotating displays, participating in plant society shows, and even scything a native plant meadow, my day-to-day tasks constantly expand my view of what horticulture can be and bolster my theoretical and hands-on knowledge.

Mid-term report

Silas is halfway through his fellowship. Silas' mid-term report describes the experiences he has gained across the different teams at RHS Garden Wisley. (Full-term report available further down the page).

RHS Garden Wisley: Dreams come true

At RHS Garden Wisley, I have worked in teams that specialise in a large array of disciplines, including alpine plants, formal gardens, and glasshouse management. This work has brought me into close contact with incredible plants I had only dreamed of seeing before the Fellowship, whether it be beastly mature cycad specimens or rare cyclamen cultivars.

RHS Garden Wisley: Beyond expectations

The Fellowship experiences have extended far beyond just my current placement at RHS Garden Wisley. Visits to great British gardens like Painshill and Sheffield Park have been a source of inspiration, allowing for a detailed exploration of the breadth of UK horticulture and its relationship with horticulture in the US and the world at large.

I have found that the Fellowship has already proved to be revolutionary and transformative for myself and my career and I can't wait to see how it will continue to outdo itself as I progress further into my time here with the RHS and UK horticultural community.
