Jeanette Jones

Horticulturist – RHS Hyde Hall

What I most enjoy is the fact that there is always something to learn and discover about plants, horticulture and the environment

I had been commuting to London for twenty years, working in the travel industry and then in administrative posts for a University.  When I realised I was spending too much time gazing out of the window watching the gardeners work, I decided that it was time for a change.

I went to evening classes to study for the City & Guilds Certificate in Gardening followed by the RHS Level 2 course, and then undertook seasonal jobs in garden maintenance.  When the Horticulturist post became available at Hyde Hall it was an ideal opportunity to combine my enthusiasm for horticulture together with my administrative background and use of databases.

I have now worked at RHS Garden Hyde Hall since 2007.  My role involves looking after the plant records and labelling with help from two volunteers. My tasks range from logging newly planted areas, to putting out labels throughout the garden, ensuring labels are visible to visitors, updating the RHS horticultural database BG-BASE, measuring trees and answering horticultural queries.

What I most enjoy is the fact that there is always something to learn and discover about plants, horticulture and the environment.
