Dense, rounded, bushy evergreen shrub about 4m in height, with young stems, undersides of young leaves and leaf and flower stalks covered in rusty brown felty down. Dark, glossy green leaves are sharply pointed to 10cm long, and in mid to late spring, fragrant pure white flowers with up to 12 tepals, emerge from velvet-brown buds

Grow in moist but well-drained neutral to acid soil in full sun or partial shade with shelter from cold winds. Flowers may be damaged by late frosts. See magnolia cultivation for further advice
