A small tree or shrub rarely exceeding around 4m in cultivation. Distinctive, elongated winter buds to around 1.25cm long open to bluish-green leaves divided into 4-6 pairs of leaflets that have toothed upper halves and turn shades of purple, red orange and yellow in autumn. Small clusters of white spring flowers may be followed by oval to rounded red fruits in autumn
