A vigorous upright, deciduous shrub about 1.5m tall, with spiny stems and glossy dark green leaves. Single, salmon-pink flowers edged and splashed white with pale yellow anthers, appear in mid-spring, followed by large yellow-green fruits. These can be used to make jams and jellies but please see notes on toxicity for further advice
