An upright to spreading, deciduous shrub to 1.5m tall and wide characterised by broad, corky wings that develop on the branchlets. Ovate to elliptic toothed leaves turn rich crimson in autumn; small, pale greenish-yellow flowers borne in spring are followed by spherical reddish-purple fruits in autumn that split to reveal bright orange seeds
