A deciduous shrub with twisted contorted stems reaching 1.5m high. When bare in winter, or carrying yellow catkins in early spring, they are used in floral displays. The leaves are round and green, turning pale yellow before dropping in autumn.

Grow in any moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, ideal for chalky soils and good for flower arranging. For more information see cobnuts and filberts
Propagate by layering in late winter and early spring
Pruning group 1, but routine pruning is not necessary
May be susceptible to caterpillars, gall mites, aphids and sawflies. Squirrels like to feed on the nuts
