A medium, occasionally large, shrub; the large, dull green leaves are flushed with purple when young and bronze in autumn. Small, pink and yellow flowers in late spring to early summer are followed in autumn by red, four-winged fruit up to 2.5cm across, splitting to reveal yellow seeds
