A decduous shrub with a low, spreading habit reaching 40cm in height and spreading to 150cm. New stems are burgundy-red and leaves are green, but pinkish at the base, and borne in whorls of three. Stubby, pendent, summer flowers are scarlet red with a purple corolla, the petals of which are paler at their base
