Annual nasturtiums

Large funnel-shaped flowers open from late spring right through to autumn, in shades of orange, yellow, red, and cream, with some frilly doubles and some bi-coloured forms. The soft, umbrella-like leaves are held on long stalks that can twine around supports.

Nasturtiums like full sun and moist but well-drained soil, with support if you want them to climb. They prefer a position sheltered from strong winds.

Avoid rich, overly-fertile soil because it will encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Their soft stems and leaves are very sensitive to frost.

The name Tropaeolum comes from the Greek word for a trophy, inspired by the plant's shield-like leaves and flowers that resemble ancient helmets.
