Make a sundial with David Harber

David Harber, a Chelsea regular, is renowned for designing and making bespoke sundials. Here he shows you how to make your own equatorial sundial

Sundials are one of the earliest tools used to mark the passage of time. They connect us to our ancestors, offer an insight into the science of astronomy and today provide an attractive and unusual feature for the garden.

Sundials may be wall clocks or standalone garden features. They take many guises but all work in the same way. A gnomon, or spoke, casts a shadow across the face of a clock to reveal the hour. The source of its power is the sun, which appears to move across the sky, and as it does so, the shadows of the gnomon lengthen across the clock's face.
