To help celebrate the joy of a summer spent gardening with children, The Garden magazine launched its first ever Kids’ Cover Competition in early 2023.

The competition, open to all children 12 years and under, had the theme: Absolutely anything to do with gardening.

Three judges selected the winners: Tom Howard, Editor of The Garden; Clare Matterson, RHS Director General; and Baroness Floella Benjamin, RHS Vice President and Ambassador, and former TV presenter.

On the launch of the competition the judges said:

“Many keen gardeners were introduced to the joy of it all at a young age,” says Tom. “And this is an amazing opportunity for the RHS to see what a child’s eye view of gardening looks like.”

“My earliest memories of gardening are from when I was five or six years old,” says Clare. “I cannot wait to be reminded of how magical gardening seems at that age.”

“Much of my career has been spent celebrating how wonderfully creative children can be when given the opportunity,” says Floella. “Both gardening and art make for happier and healthier people and childhood lasts a lifetime. So I’m smiling just thinking about the entries we’re going to receive.”

The deadline for entries was 10am on Friday 26 May 2023.

What the winner(s) will get:

  • A framed copy of the cover
  • A bundle of gardening goodies
  • Art supplies worth £100
