Nigella is a traditional cottage garden plant that is really easy to grow and has very pretty seed heads.

Growing conditions

Love-in-a-mist seeds prefer a sunny position.

When to grow

Sow indoors February–April
Sow outdoors April–June and in September
    

What you need:

  • Packet of Nigella seeds
  • Seed trays
  • Seed compost
  • Plant label
  • Unheated greenhouse or cold frame
  • Gardening gloves
  • How to grow

What you need to do:

  1. Fill your tray with seed compost.
  2. Sprinkle the seeds thinly over the surface and cover with a thin layer of compost.
  3. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into another tray about 5cm apart.
  4. Plant outside from April onwards, spacing 15cm apart.
