About the garden

Houghton Hall might be one of the finest Palladian Houses in England and boasts an award-winning five-acre Walled Garden divided into themed areas. A number of architectural features such as a rustic temple with fallow deer antlers decorating the pediment; a fruit cage in the shape of one of the stable towers; and a pergola for wisteria are the designs of Julian and Isabel Bannerman.
The fruit cage with espaliers of apples and pears forms the centre of the Kitchen Garden; there is a formal rose parterre with fountain and classical statues; a Mediterranean garden of French lavender and box tree hedging; and a spectacular double-sided herbaceous border. The Jeppe Hein ‘Waterflame’ shows the interaction between water and fire and adds a contemporary note to the garden.
Other contemporary sculptures on display are works by Richard Long and Stephen Cox. There are also standard laburnums, peony borders, vegetable and herb gardens, beds of irises, a magnolia corner, a glasshouse and a cherry tree walkway.
