New-build gardens

You’ve just picked up the keys to your brand-new home and can’t wait to move in and get gardening, but where do you start. Follow this step-by-step guide to achieving your dream garden

Where to start ...

The joy of first entering your precious new home is intoxicating – the fresh paint, the never-before-used toilet, the pristine glass. When it comes to new-build gardens however, things might not go quite so smoothly.
The RHS has brought together the essentials to help you get started.

Even with no gardening experience, following these steps will help you create a space you can enjoy in no time.

  • Understand and improve your soil

  • Make the most of rainwater where it falls

  • Choose plants that suit young, exposed plots

  • Bring wildlife into your garden from day one

  • Shape the space so it works for how you want to live

Step 1: It starts with the soil and surfaces

Healthy gardens begin below ground, understanding your soil helps your new garden come to life

Step 2: Making the most of water where it falls

Working with rainwater supports healthier plants and helps your garden cope with dry spells and downpours

Step 3: Planting with purpose and diversity

Layering textures and structures and matching plants to your gardens conditions boosts biodiversity and successes

Step 4: Bring nature home

Welcoming nature into your garden helps support wildlife, build resilience, and create a healthy living ecosystem

Step 5: A space for you

Shaping your space so it sparks joy and improves your health and wellbeing

The RHS is fighting your corner

Gardening is one of the most widespread and meaningful ways people connect with nature, yet there is currently no legal requirement in the UK for government or developers to provide new-build homes with a garden or space to grow. Planning policies vary between local authorities and, while some may encourage outdoor space, these expectations are rarely statutory.

Alongside calling on government to rethink how space to grow is embedded in planning policy, the RHS is also working with developers to demonstrate how well-designed gardens and growing spaces can be delivered in new homes, recognising the benefits for health and wellbeing, the environment, and social cohesion.
Our vision is a world where gardening is embraced as a way of life, bringing joy and fulfilment while supporting healthier lives, stronger communities, and thriving environments.

The message from first time buyers:

  • 90% said access to a garden is essential to their quality of life

  • 70% want to personalise their garden when buying a new home

  • 38% would pay over £10,000 extra for a
    home with a garden
