A deciduous shrub or small tree to 4m high, with ascending branches creating a vase-shaped form. Leaves are broadly ovate with broadly serrated margins, and coloured from dark green to deep purple-bronze, turning shades of red and yellow in autumn. Produces dense clusters of fragrant flowers on bare stems in late winter and early spring, each with four long, narrow, golden yellow petals, backed by small, recurved rich brown sepals at the base
