A compact, upright, spiny shrub to 1.2m high. The deep purple-red foliage is mottled with pink and white, this variegation is particularly noticeable on the young leaves before the leaf colours darken with age. Small, red-tinged, pale yellow flowers, borne in spring, are followed by red berries in autumn
