A tropical, epiphytic orchid with upright, cane-like stems growing from a short creeping rhizome. Spindle-shaped stems are broader in upper half and serve as a storage of water and nutrients. Fleshy, evergreen leaves are carried at the top of each stem and last for a couple of seasons. The leaves are firm, leathery, oval-shaped, up to 15cm long and 3cm wide. Large showy flowers are held on short terminal stems, arising from the tips of new mature growth throughout the year. Emerging flower buds are wrapped in two oval, papery sheaths. Each flower measures up to 10cm across. Flowers may vary in colour in range of pinks, occassionally with darker spots and pink/purple and white/yellow lip
