A small evergreen shrub to about 1m high, with a dense, branching habit, and glossy, deep green leaves up to 15cm long, with reddish-brown felting on the undersides. Produces clusters of up to 12 red buds, opening in late spring to pale pink flowers with wavy edges, that fade to near white inside as they mature

How to Grow

Cultivation

Grow in moist but well-drained, humus rich, acidic soil, in partial or dappled shade. Choose a site away from frost pockets and sheltered from strong winds, and do not allow plants to dry out. Mulch annually, ideally with leaf mould. See rhododendron cultivation for more detailed advice

Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer, or by grafting in winter
