Lilies

RHS Genus Guide
Among the most glamorous of summer bulbs, there are lilies for containers, sunny borders and woodland settings. Flowers, sometimes heavily scented, can be bold trumpets or the more modest Turk's cap flower with its distinctive swept-back petals.

Botanical name: Lilium

Common name: Lily

RHS

Appearance

Flower shapes include trumpet, bowl, funnel-shaped and Turk's cap. Colours range from white, through pastels to bold bicolours and even dark, purple-black. Floral displays can range from one or two flowers on a short 30-45cm (12-18in) stem to imposing displays of up to 150 flowers on a 3m (10ft) stem.

Preferences

Lilies like moist, well-drained soil, with added leafmould. Many prefer acid to neutral soils although some are lime-tolerant. Most lilies grow well in full sun, with the base of the plant in shade, but some prefer partial shade.

Dislikes

Lily bulbs will rot in poorly drained soils. They dislike strong winds, so may need staking.

Did you know?

Lilies grow in a wide range of habitats and are native to North America, Europe, Asia and the Far East. All parts of lilies are poisonous to cats.
