Lilies for pots and borders

RHS Genus Guide
With striking, elegant flowers, lilies are a bold and colourful addition to any summer garden. They are good plants for containers and combine well with roses and perennials in garden borders. From tall to short, bright to pastel-coloured and scented to unscented, there is a lily to suit most situations. They grow best in full sun or light shade.

Botanical name: Lilium

Common name: Lily

RHS

Appearance

Upright, leafy stems carry impressive trumpet-like or reflexed flowers in shades of white, pink, red, yellow or orange, sometimes spotted or streaked with other colours. Some are heavily scented.

Preferences

Most lilies will grow in well-drained acid or neutral soil, although some prefer alkaline soil. They are best planted in a sunny position where their roots will be lightly shaded. Tall lilies may need staking.

Dislikes

Very heavy, permanently wet soils can cause bulbs to rot. None will do well in deep shade.

Did you know?

All parts of lilies (Lilium), including the pollen, cause serious poisoning to cats. The bulbs are poisonous to other pets.
