This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.

'Gulftide' is a dense medium-sized evergreen shrub with ovate, strongly spiny, dark green leaves up to 5cm in length. Small, fragrant white flowers in clusters from late summer, occasionally followed by blue-black berries
'Aureomarginatus' is a rather slow-growing, dense, rounded, holly-like shrub, up to 3m high inland, up to 5m high in milder coastal areas, with glossy leaves, up to 6cm long, which are dark green edged in deep yellow; the leaf margins have two to four spine-tipped teeth each side, but leaves towards the tops of mature plants are often entire. Clusters of small white flowers, each only 5mm across, are sweetly-scented, appearing from late summer to autumn, and are sometimes followed by ovoid blue-black fruits 1cm long
'Goshiki' is a slow-growing and compact evergreen shrub, with holly-like, coarsely spined oval leaves marbled with cream and often tinged pink or bronze when young, and clusters of small fragrant white flowers in the leaf axils in late summer or autumn
'Variegatus' is a rather slow-growing medium-sized evergreen shrub with spiny, ovate leaves boldly edged with creamy-white. Flowers small, white, fragrant, sometimes followed by black fruits
'Purpureus' is a compact evergreen shrub to 4m, with leathery, spined, holly-like leaves, dark coppery-bronze when young, and small, fragrant white flowers in late summer and autumn
