The design of The Macmillan Legacy Garden is inspired by a fictional couple, one a painter the other a photographer. The garden is a celebration of their life and the legacy they have left to future generations. It incorporates the extensive collection of objects and curiosities that inspired their work.
The planting scheme features perennials, bulbs and self-seeding plants that return year after year, thus creating their own legacy. The area of white flowers demonstrates the challenges of a cancer diagnosis, when life seems to lose its colour. However, it develops into more colourful and tactile planting, expressing the warmth and energy Macmillan’s support provides.
The garden communicates the importance of gifts left in wills to Macmillan Cancer Support – which make up more than one third of the charity’s income.
