Medicinal Mulch

Long Borders

The border

Gardens are more than just ornamental. The plants within them are living systems that can heal through their medicinal properties and inspire hope for a more sustainable world. Rooted in the principles of solution-oriented gardening, this border emphasises the vital role of cultivating nature as a response to pressing issues such as climate change and economical strain.

At the foundation of the garden is a Salix mulch. By retaining water, protecting plants from disease and enriching the soil, its presence promotes organic gardening as a sustainable way to nurture biodiversity and conserve resources. The design also features woven willow edging to honour the many uses of Salix in horticulture.

With a mix of resilience, beauty and ecological harmony, the garden becomes a metaphor for care, reminding us that tending to the earth is as essential as tending to our own health.

Key plants:

  • Salix: contains antibiotic and anti fungal properties. Used as a mulch it enriches the soil, improves soil structure, aids water retention, regulates soil temperature and suppresses weeds

  • Salix x fragilis: the bark of the willow tree is rich in salicylic acid. This has been used for its medicinal properties since 1500 BC.

  • Salvia officinalis: used to treat sore throats, infected gums and mouth ulcers.

  • Mentha × piperita: used in toothpaste for its antiseptic properties

  • Echinacea purpurea: used to stimulate the body’s immune system and help overcome infections.

About the designer – Laura Ridgway-Grace

Laura is a horticulturist with a deep-rooted passion for transforming spaces into natural havens of biodiversity. Laura worked for 10 years in the NHS, which enhanced her understanding of how outdoor spaces and tending to plants can be deeply rewarding for our mental health. She has now dedicated her work to supporting others in finding their feet in horticulture and developing gardens to reconnect with wildlife and harmonize with nature.

The garden legacy

After the show the garden will be repurposed, with plants moving to the local community and gardens.
