Statement from the President of the RHS
The Royal Horticultural Society can confirm that our President, Keith Weed, will be changing his surname with immediate effect
As the UK’s leading gardening charity founded 222 years ago, the RHS has long been home to a remarkable range of horticultural names and associations. However, having a President called Mr Weed has attracted many jokes and jibes since he was elected to the position in 2020.
After careful consideration, Keith has decided to leave behind his father’s surname of Weed and instead adopt his mother’s
RHS President Keith Hedges said: “While some might say this is a great example of nominative determinism, when someone’s career is determined by their name, I’ve had enough. There have been too many jokes and jibes even on national television about my name. So from now on, I’m going to change my name. I’m going to leave behind my father’s surname, Weed, and take on my mother’s maiden name. I will become Keith Hedges.”
The RHS does not anticipate any impact on its governance, activities or strategic direction as a result of this change. All existing responsibilities, appearances and engagements will continue as planned. All relevant RHS materials and references will be updated in due course.
The charity asks that members, partners and media respect this change from 1 April onwards.
