This evening lecture series of 6 lectures (2 hours per week) on garden history will look at the first gardens created and why and how they developed. What were the influences that shaped human desire to settle in one place and grow plants? We will go back in time and look at the main fundamental garden design styles that have shaped the development of gardens throughout the ages. As well as the study of their key features we will look at the social, religious, political or economic reasons for their conception. Some gardens of significance will be studied in depth. Garden design styles that will be covered include: Egyptian, Medieval, Persian/Islamic, Italian (Renaissance/Mannerism/Baroque), French (Renaissance/Baroque), The English Landscape Movement, and Arts& Crafts. We will also look at the plant hunters and the use of plants in garden design. The course is intended for people with an interest in gardens, plants and garden design. An interest in the subject is the only entry requirement. 6 sessions including 12th May, 19th May, 2nd June, 9th June, 16th June, 23rd June (all consecutive weeks except for half term gap week)
