Gardens Making Cities More Liveable: How Humble Hedges Help
Over 80% of UK residents live in towns and cities. Gardens take up a significant proportion (30%) of urban footprint and, with the right planting, make our cities more liveable by cooling the air, helping manage storm water flow, taking up air pollutants, providing resource for pollinators and much more.
Over the last decade, RHS research has explored a wide range of plants in diverse urban settings, identifying key plant characteristics linked to the delivery of these benefits. This lecture will share insights from that research journey and highlight recent and ongoing projects,
while also examining the potential of hedges as a tool for environmental education.
Speaker: Dr. Tijana Blanusa leads the RHS Ecosystem Services Research Programme, identifying the structural and functional traits of plants that can be isolated, optimised and employed to benefit the wider environment.
