Large, bushy evergreen shrub about 8m tall, with purple young stems bearing small dark green leaves, spiny on upper surface as well as the margins, broadly edged with creamy-white. Small, white male flowers appear in late spring, ideal for pollinating female cultivars

Cultivation

Grow in moist but well-drained soil in full sun or part shade. Although partial shade is suitable, variegated cultivars have better leaf colour in full sun
