Amelanchier

RHS Genus Guide
Amelanchier is a genus of graceful small trees and medium shrubs that provide multi-season interest. It offers delicate spring flowers, attractive summer foliage, edible berries and bright autumn colour, making it a superb choice for specimen planting in gardens of all sizes. The berries make it an excellent choice for a wildlife-friendly garden.

Botanical name: Amelanchier

Common name: juneberry, serviceberry, snowy mespilus

Appearance

Amelanchier bears clouds of pink-bronze buds which open to star-shaped white flowers in early to mid-spring, often just as the young bronze-tinted leaves emerge. These are followed by small, dark purple-black berries in summer. The foliage matures to green, then turns striking shades of orange, red and yellow in autumn. Many forms have a light, open habit with elegant branching.

Preferences

Amelanchiers thrive in full sun or partial shade and prefer moist but well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil.

Dislikes

Very dry soils or prolonged drought can reduce flowering and fruiting. Exposed, windy sites may damage early blooms, and waterlogged conditions should be avoided.

Did you know?

The berries are edible and might be used in jams, pies and preserves but, since they are also popular with birds, very few make it into the kitchen!
